How Client-Side PDF Merging Works Under the Hood

When you merge PDF documents using PDFSense, your files never leave your computer or travel over a network to an external server. The application loads our client-side JavaScript engine (built on pdf-lib and WebAssembly binary modules) directly inside your web browser sandbox. Once you select your PDF files, the browser reads them into local memory (RAM) as raw ArrayBuffer byte arrays. Our engine parses the cross-reference (XREF) tables and object streams of each source document, copies the visual page trees, annotations, and embedded fonts into a newly instantiated PDFDocument structure, and re-indexes all indirect object identifiers in-memory. The merged document is then synthesized into a clean Uint8Array and delivered to you via a local Blob URL object. Because no POST requests or cloud worker processes are ever invoked, your files remain strictly between your device screen and hardware memory.

Step-by-Step Guide: Merging PDFs Locally

01

Select or drag and drop two or more PDF files into the local browser dropzone.

02

Drag the document cards left or right to set your exact desired page order.

03

Click the 'Merge PDF' button to trigger instant in-memory concatenation.

04

Save the newly combined PDF file immediately to your hard drive.

Ideal Privacy & Security Use Cases

Local PDF concatenation is critical whenever files contain legally binding terms or protected proprietary information:

Legal Discovery & Pleadings

Collate case exhibits, client affidavits, and confidential interrogatory responses without violating attorney-client privilege.

M&A Diligence & NDA Contracts

Assemble merger agreements, asset schedules, and non-disclosure contracts without risking IP leakage to third-party web servers.

Corporate Financial Reporting

Unify quarterly earnings balances, board meeting packets, and payroll summaries prior to executive distribution.

Medical & HIPAA Documentation

Combine patient charts, laboratory workups, and insurance authorizations in full compliance with HIPAA security rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are my merged PDF files ever transmitted over the Internet?

No. PDFSense runs entirely client-side using JavaScript and WebAssembly inside your browser. Your files are read into local RAM and merged without making any POST requests or transferring data to any external server.

Is there a limit on how many PDF files I can merge?

Because processing takes place in your computer's browser memory, there are no artificial server paywalls or file count restrictions. You can merge as many documents as your device's available RAM can hold.

Does merging preserve embedded fonts, form fields, and vector bookmarks?

Yes. The in-memory engine extracts the full page object tree including font dictionaries, vector art, and standard annotations, preserving original visual fidelity.

Can I merge password-protected PDFs?

If the PDF is encrypted with an open password, you must decrypt it first using our local Unlock tool. Once unrestricted, its page trees can be assembled into the merged output.
